Thursday October 29, 2009 Seminar

Randy Owen, COO of Coldwell Banker Commercial, came to seminar with a terrific presentation. He spoke on the large areas in the real estate field. His main focus seemed to be that the students need to get involved in the many different organizations that are available to us. He listed the organizations that follow; BOMA, IREM, NAIOP, ICSC, IFMA, and CORENET and told the students to use these organizations as a resource to grow and learn from other professionals.
Mr. Owen also talked about the different trade publications that are out there for students and professionals to take advantage of. One thing that the students are very excited about was the pledge to help out the students with trying to find more internship opportunities that are closer to home. The Utah state president of IREM and the up-coming state president were both in attendance and gave their support.

John Rutkowski, head of the FM group in Palmyra, NY, came to campus and gave a historical presentation of the LDS sites that he manages in the Palmyra, Waterloo, and upstate NY area. He spoke to the students about documentation being a key factor in the way business is done. He also stressed the importance of know who the owner is and what their needs/wants are for the facilities. The students were very interested and asked several pertinent questions. One topic John made clear was to not only surround yourself with good employees, but to also treat them well! "You are only as good as the people you surround yourself with." said John. His presentation was very informative and valuable to the students.
