Re-Vamping the Program

Students in the FPM program have a new opportunity this semester to get a hands-on experience in maintaining mechanical equipment through the new Sustainability and Mechanical Lab in the Operations and Maintenance class. This lab will be used for hands-on instruction for students. It will help students better understand system components, problem diagnostics, preventive maintenance, scheduled maintenance in addition to other core competencies of the FPM Major. Through this instruction, students hope to be more prepared to direct and supervise the operations of companies more efficiently and effectively over the lives o the buildings they manage.

FPM Weekly Seminar 1/29

This weeks seminar featured Jamie Galileo of Larry H. Miller Sports & Entertainment speaking to us about the joys of public facility management. Some of the facilities he manages include the Energy Solutions Arena, Franklin Covey Field and the Miller Motorsports Park.

He gave us a great perspective on what it really takes to be a public facility manager. Bottom line was that you have to love what you do. It is just like any other job you come into work at five and go home at eight ... AM that is. He also introduced our students to IAAM, an association for public facility management.

Seminar Announcements included:

- The scholarship link is available and populated on the FPM website
- Deadline to buy tickets for the FPM formal is Feb. 12th
- Next week's seminar is the College Seminar in the De Jong Concert Hall
- Student volunteers are needed for the Feb. 18th BYU high school engineering fair

FPM Weekly Seminar 1/22

This past week, John Walker, President of ManageMen and Janitor University,

was the featured speaker at the weekly FPM Seminar.  His presentation’s objective was to educate the students of the FPM program about the common perception of cleaning in business today as compared to the standards taught and practiced at ManageMen and Janitor University. Mr. Walker discussed in depth how the common cleaning standards in practice today really are inefficient and ineffective.  He detailed how important it is to understand why today’s standards aren’t effectual in that cleaning today is actually simply spreading dirt and filth.

Upon closing his remarks on today’s practices, he then discussed in depth better practices that need to be implemented in industry today.  Mr. Walker talked about the importance of good and effective cleaning and the janitorial industry.  He outlined the objectives of Janitor University, from

which Dr. Jeff Campbell graduated last year.  Those who attend Janitor University learn the cleaning philosophy and successful elements of the OS1 Cleaning Process.  Mr. Walker extended an invitation to all the students in the program to attend the University to further their understanding and education on cleaning.

We appreciate Mr. Walker’s instruction this past week and look forward to many more valuable seminars this semester!
